Ashtabula — The Ohio Forge Whose Name Became the Word for a One-Piece Crank

Say the word Ashtabula to anyone who has turned a wrench on a BMX bike and they will picture a part, not a place. They will picture a single S-shaped piece of forged steel that runs straight through the bottom bracket and comes out the other side as the second crank arm — heavy, cheap, and nearly impossible to break. What almost nobody pictures is a harbor town on Lake Erie, or the forge that sat in it, or the fact that the company whose name is stamped into BMX vocabulary was never a bicycle company at all.

This chapter is mostly about telling those two things apart, because published BMX writing runs them together constantly.

Two different things wearing the same name

There is Ashtabula the company — a drop-forging operation in Ashtabula, Ohio, whose formal name was the Ashtabula Bow Socket Company and which was later known as ABS. And there is the Ashtabula crank — a design, not a brand: one piece of forged steel that forms the left arm, the spindle and the right arm in a single unit, dropped through an oversized bottom bracket shell and held by a pair of cup-and-cone bearings.

Those two are not the same thing, and the second one long outgrew the first. Enormous numbers of one-piece cranks that riders call Ashtabula cranks were forged by other companies in other countries and never came within a thousand miles of Ohio. When a modern parts listing says Ashtabula crank, it is describing a shape and a fitment standard. When this page says Ashtabula, it means the company, unless it says otherwise.

What a bow socket was

The name is not a mystery once you know what the company originally sold. A bow socket is a piece of hardware from the carriage and early automobile trade — the forged fitting that holds the bows, the curved ribs that carry a folding top. A company that forged those was in the business of making small, strong, repeatable steel parts in volume for whoever was building vehicles that year. Bicycles came later, and by the same logic: the bicycle industry needed small, strong, repeatable steel parts in volume.

Collector accounts describe a company with a history running well past a hundred years and a product range that at various points reached into heavy marine and defense work. Those accounts come from enthusiast forums rather than corporate records, so this page repeats them as reported rather than confirmed. What is consistent across every source is the core of it: Ashtabula was a forge, and the forge outlived several of the industries it served.

The Schwinn years

The relationship that made the name famous was with Schwinn. The arrangement described repeatedly by collectors is a clean division of labor: Ashtabula forged the raw parts, and Schwinn did its own machining, its own thread cutting and its own chrome plating in Chicago. That detail explains something that confuses people looking at old parts — a Schwinn crank and an Ashtabula crank can be the same forging with different finishing, because that is exactly what they were.

The same forge supplied the flat-blade steel fork that every Schwinn middleweight and Sting-Ray wore, which is why that fork profile is still called an Ashtabula fork today. Stems came out of the same operation. So did the cranks that ended up under a generation of American kids before anyone had thought to race a bicycle on dirt.

How BMX inherited it

When BMX arrived, it arrived on Sting-Rays. The first riders were not choosing components; they were riding what was already under them, and what was already under them was Ashtabula. That accident of timing is the whole reason the one-piece crank became the default BMX crank rather than a relic of the muscle-bike era.

Then the industry formalized it. As framebuilders started producing purpose-built race frames in volume through the late 1970s, they needed a crank that was cheap, strong and available in quantity, and the answer was already being forged in Ohio. Collector accounts place the BMX-relevant production window at roughly 1974 to 1982, with the peak years around 1977 to 1980 — precisely the stretch when frames were being built by the thousand and every one of them needed something to pedal with. Ashtabula was a primary parts vendor to that industry, supplying the forgings that other companies machined, plated, stamped and sold under their own names.

This is worth stating plainly because it cuts against how BMX usually tells its own story. The glamour parts of the era were the machined aluminum pieces — the sealed hubs, the anodized stems, the three-piece cranks that came later from Cook Bros and others. The Ashtabula crank was the opposite of glamorous. It was steel, it was heavy, it was on the bike you already had, and it did not break. Riders spent a decade trying to replace it and it kept outlasting the replacements.

The end of the forge

The company did not so much lose the bicycle business as get left behind by it. The industry was moving toward three-piece cranks and toward Japanese and Taiwanese suppliers who could deliver machined aluminum at a price American forging could not match, and the market for a heavy steel one-piece crank narrowed to the low end.

The closing date is genuinely unsettled. One widely repeated collector account has the Ashtabula Bow Socket plant closing in 1982, with the parent company lasting only a short while after. A separate account, sourced from a local obituary, says the plant — by then known as the Ashtabula Forge — closed around 1980. An entity named ABS Industries Inc. appears in Ohio corporate records, which fits the ABS successor name but does not by itself date the forge's end. Two years apart is not a large gap, but it is a real one, and nobody should quote either date from this page as settled.

What survived is stranger than a company. The tooling standard survived — one-piece cranks are still forged today to dimensions that trace back to that shop. And the word survived. Every time somebody says Ashtabula crank, a town on Lake Erie gets named by a rider who has no idea it is a place.

Where the record runs thin

  • This chapter rests on collector sources, not corporate ones. Almost everything documented here comes from enthusiast forums and reference pages rather than company records, trade press or an archive. It is consistent across independent sources, which is worth something, but it is not the same standard as a period catalog or a magazine test.
  • The closing date. 1982 by one account, around 1980 by another. Unresolved.
  • The founding date and the company's full corporate history. Sources agree it ran well over a hundred years. Nobody we found states the founding year with a citation.
  • The marine and defense work. Forum accounts describe heavy shipbuilding and naval hardware in the company's earlier history. Repeated here as reported, not confirmed.
  • A claim worth chasing. At least one source states that Ashtabula built one of the earliest complete BMX bikes available, possibly the first, in the mid-1970s. If true that is a significant claim and it belongs in the main text of this page rather than in this box. We could not verify it, and an unverified first is exactly the kind of claim this library does not publish as fact. If a period ad or catalog exists, it would settle it.
  • Which BMX brands bought directly. That Ashtabula supplied the industry broadly is well attested. Which specific BMX companies bought forgings direct, in which years, is not documented in anything we located.
  • bmxsociety.com was unreachable throughout this research, and bmxmuseum.com blocks automated access. Both may hold better primary material than anything cited here.
