A frame does not come with a paper trail. It comes with a shape, and shapes travel. This layer is the design half of the map — which frames begat which, who welded what for whom, and where the credit is still being argued over.

Rules I held myself to: every line on this page traces back to a chapter in this library or a source cited on one of those chapters. Where two accounts fight each other, I marked it as a fight and left it there. Nobody’s brand gets pushed to the front, mine included. My line sits in here the same as everybody else’s, because that’s what it is — one branch.

Layer 3 — The Frame and Design Lineage

This is the layer people argue about hardest, because a frame does not come with a paper trail. It comes with a shape, and shapes travel. Somebody sees a gusset, somebody borrows a dropout, somebody crashes and the next frame gets a brace welded in. Here is what this library can actually document.

One shop floor, two teenagers

Here is the one that still gets me. In 1982 and 1983 I was building the Hi-Tech frame at Voris Dixon’s shop in Anaheim. Twenty-five frames, drawn by a thirteen-year-old, welded on a real jig by people who knew what they were doing. What I did not find out for decades is that another teenager was in that same shop in the same years building the first Hyper frame. That was Billy Farrell. I heard it from his father years after Billy had passed, in a letter: I must of barely missed Billy at Voris’s shop. Two kids, two frames, one shop floor. Neither one knew the other was there.

When Hi-Tech shut down in 1984, Voris handed the design to his friend Mike Scurto at Pro-Neck. Scurto added a single brace between the top tube and down tube behind the head tube and put it out as the National Pro. Everything else carried straight over — the pierced seat mast, the welded-on seat post clamp, the inside-and-outside dropout welds, the tube pairing. Voris said it himself in a Snakebite interview: the Pro Neck National Pro is my frame without the cable guides and seat post clamp and with the strange tube gusset. The dates on that handoff do not line up, and I have laid the whole problem out below.

VDC — the manufacturing hub

Voris Dixon's shop was not just where Hi-Tech and the first Hyper got built. It was a manufacturing hub — a contract shop feeding a dozen otherwise-unrelated brands at once, several of which were racing head-to-head against each other at the very same gate. Hutch, Powerlite, Pro Neck, Robinson, CW, Star Products, Wisconsin Cycle's Traker, Vector, and an early S&M bar all came out of that one Santa Ana building, most of it confirmed in Voris's own words. A few items — the fuller scope of the Huffy work, and Free Agent's place on the client list — rest on Bill Ryan's own account, and are marked as such above. The corporate layer above shows who bought whom. This layer shows who built for whom, and the two stories barely overlap.

The frames that came from crashes

Two of SE Racing’s most important design decisions came out of somebody getting hurt or somebody getting mad. Rod Beckering broke the head tube off an ungusseted SE aluminum frame at a national and broke his jaw doing it. Perry Kramer saw that and refused to let his name go on the frame until it had a gusset welded into the head tube. The PK Ripper has been in production nearly fifty years and it still has that gusset. A rider nobody outside the pits remembers is the reason.

The frame underneath all of that was the JU-6, named for Jeff Utterback, who left SE not long after it dropped to start GJS with his brother and his dad. GJS ended up known for a head tube gusset shape so specific that builders still say GJS-style gusset today, mine included.

The Assassin came out of the same kind of problem. At SE's late-1980s restart out of the back of a Long Beach warehouse — I date it to 1988 — I was running my TECH Racing Team and went to Mike Devitt at SE for bikes. He built a stretched PK Ripper for Brian Lopes — we called it the Long PK — that worked great, and a stretched Quadangle for Billy Harrison — the Long Quad — that flexed more than we wanted. So Devitt and I drew a straight-tube race frame using Quadangle dropouts and rear stays and called it the Assassin. The prototype went under Harrison, SE could not build the rest of the run, and not being able to supply my own team is exactly what pushed me into building frames myself.

Lessons that became a frame

Between Brackens and Supercross I built a personal frame, just for me, never a product. I borrowed the twin down tubes off Pete Loncarevich’s LRPs and TWs. It taught me the twin-down-tube design flexed too much once a frame got stretched out long, and that lesson went straight into the frame I designed two years later. The fork dropouts from the Brackens frame carried into it too. So the first Supercross frame is really one borrowed idea that failed and one borrowed idea that worked.

Pete’s own line runs the same way. The geometry on the original LRP came off the TW — one of his first sponsors, back when he was twelve. He did not start from a blank sheet, he started from the bike that taught him how to race. Years later he came back to racing on Supercross geometry, and the LRP we build now sits on it.

One frame, five head badges

Bill Bastian’s Race Inc. barely bothered building its own brand. The shop built other people’s frames instead, and the RA-7 — released in 1976, generally credited as the first mass-produced aluminum BMX frame — went out under FMF’s Team Replica, Peugeot, Cycle Pro, Laguna’s GT, and SE Racing. Same aluminum frame, five head badges, depending on who bought that month’s run. Who actually drew it is a fight this library has not settled.

Freestyle hardware

Freestyle needed its own parts before it needed its own sanction. Bob Haro was breaking race frames in skateparks on the 1981 tour, so he sketched what a freestyle bike ought to be and took it to his frame sponsor, Torker. Prototypes got beat on by Haro, Bob Morales and Eddie Fiola. Torker’s Fullerton factory started building them in 1982 and the Haro Freestyler landed that summer — the first frame and fork ever built on purpose for freestyle. Serial numbers ended in F. When Torker went under in November 1984, Haro was already running its own manufacturing.

The other piece of freestyle hardware everybody argues about is the detangler, and the order is documented. Steve Potts built the rotor watching Mike Buff ride and licensed it to ACS; it reached the market in 1985. Brian Scura’s Gyro followed in 1986, after he licensed his own split-cable design to Odyssey. Both were real designs. One shipped first.

And the GT Performer, 1983: Eddie Fiola and Bob Morales, designers of record on two U.S. patents. That is the whole credit list.

The fights this layer does not settle

Every real history has holes in it. Papering over them is how legends get built, and legends are exactly what this library is trying to take apart. Here are the open questions that touch the frame and design layer directly. The rest are on the corporate layer.

Contested — who built the first BMX bike

Bob Osborn’s 1984 book names Marvin Church Sr. and Jr., November 1973 — a frame built in a garage and a set of Schwinn Diamond cranks cut apart and rewelded from 6.5 to 7.5 inches. Osborn was in the room in those years, which makes it a strong claim.

Against that: Redline shipped the first tubular chromoly BMX fork in February 1974 and had the Squareback in production later that year, and the MX-II followed. Webco pivoted into building its own BMX frames in late 1973 or early 1974. Those are production firsts with catalogs, serial numbers, and surviving frames.

A first bike is not the same thing as a first product. A separate Hall of Fame nominee write-up dates the Church frame to 1972, a year earlier than Osborn’s own account. We are flagging the gap, not picking a winner.

Contested — who designed the RA-7

Our FMF chapter flags an unresolved dispute over whether Scot Breithaupt or Bill Bastian drew the RA-7. What the Race Inc. chapter adds is that the design traces back to Bastian’s earlier Kawasaki and Triple A prototype work in 1974 and 1975, which predates his relationship with Breithaupt and FMF. On that record Breithaupt is a customer who started taking frames to rebrand in 1976. That is context, not a resolution, and we are not calling it one.

Contested — the Pro-Neck National Pro dates

BMX Plus! road-tested a fully developed Pro-Neck National Pro in its September 1982 issue, credited to Kevin McNeal’s rider input starting in mid-1981 — on the market well before Hi-Tech BMX shut down in 1984.

My own account, backed by Voris Dixon in a Snakebite interview and confirmed with Will Scurto, has the Hi-Tech design going to Pro-Neck after that 1984 shutdown. Both accounts are independently sourced. Neither one is invented. What nobody can confirm is how they fit together.

One unconfirmed possibility: National Pro may not have been a single unchanging frame, and the gusseted version may have been a running change that came later. That is a guess, and it is labeled as one.

The fourth fight — the date of the first 2-Hip contest — sits on the corporate layer with the rest of the sanctions. This library does not settle any of them.
