Max BMX Pants — Torker's Racing-Pants Brand (1980–1985)
Max BMX Pants — Torker's Racing-Pants Brand (1980–1985)
A Legend Bike Co. history chapter
Max was the clothing side of Torker. In the early 1980s, when Torker was one of the names that mattered in BMX racing, Max BMX Pants carried the Torker name onto the rider — racing pants and apparel built for the gate, the same years Torker frames were winning. It ran from 1980 to 1985.
A Torker brand, not a one-off
Brands like Torker didn't just sell frames in those days. The good ones dressed their riders too. Max was Torker's answer to that — a sister brand for racing pants and clothing that put the Torker world on the body, not just under it. For roughly five years, from 1980 through 1985, that's what Max was: Torker's apparel line during the brand's strongest stretch in BMX.
It belonged to that early-'80s moment in the sport, when BMX racing was growing fast and riders needed real gear to race in. Max sat right in the middle of it, under the Torker roof.
Where it sits today
Here's the part that's worth saying plainly. Max wasn't Bill Ryan's brand back in the day. It was Torker's. Bill owns Torker now, so the Max name sits under his roof today — under his guardianship — but he didn't start it and never claimed to. The 1980–1985 history is Torker's, and it's told here straight, the way it happened.
Max and TECH are two different brands
This trips people up, so it's worth being clear. Max BMX Pants and TECH BMX Pants are not the same thing, and they never were.
Max was Torker's pants brand, 1980 to 1985. TECH BMX Pants was a separate brand — Bill Ryan's own. Bill started TECH in 1986 and ran it through 1993. Different name, different owner, different years. The two only share a roof now: both sit under Bill's guardianship today, Max through his ownership of Torker and TECH as his own brand. TECH has its own story, and it'll get its own chapter here.
What we don't know
The record on Max is thin, and we'd rather leave a gap than fill it with guesses. We're not going to print Max model names, team rosters, catalog details, or specific product specs that we can't source. What's solid is this: Max was Torker's BMX racing-pants and clothing sister brand, it ran from 1980 to 1985, and the name sits under Bill Ryan's guardianship today through Torker. The finer detail — exact product lines, which riders wore it, year-by-year catalog history — is still being pieced together. If that part feels short, that's why. We'll add to it as real sources turn up, not before.

Primary source: Bill Ryan, owner of Torker Racing today, on the standing of Max and TECH. Max BMX Pants was Torker's BMX racing-pants and clothing sister brand, 1980–1985; Bill did not found it. TECH BMX Pants was Bill Ryan's separate, later brand, 1986–1993. Both sit under Bill's guardianship now — Max through his ownership of Torker, TECH as his own brand.
