The company run by Greg Hill's father, and why it isn't the same as his own later brand, GHP

A father's company, a True Temper frame, and a job shop in Santa Ana

Star Products, also written Star BMX or Star BMX Products, was run by Greg Hill's father during the years his son was coming up as one of the fastest amateurs, then pros, in the sport. Voris Dixon's Santa Ana shop, VDC, built the Star frames under contract, out of True Temper tubing ordered in 500-frame lots. Dixon's own recollection of the material is warm by his standards: True Temper, he said, did nice work, and all the parts fit together well. Beyond frames, Star is remembered by collectors chiefly for its handlebars. The Star Bar was one of the better-selling BMX bars of its era.

Not GHP

Here's the distinction this page exists to make plainly. Greg Hill, the 1982 IBMXF BMX World Champion, started his own company, GHP, Greg Hill Products, in September 1983, after leaving GT Racing. GHP built frames, forks, and its own line of bars and complete bikes, and ran until mid-1986, when a deal with Redline Engineering required Hill to divest from it entirely; his name and the company both had to come off each other. GHP came back twice more, in the early 1990s and again from 2005 on. Star Products predates all of that. It was the father's company, not the son's, and the two shouldn't be treated as the same brand under two names.

The two brands sit close enough together, in family and in product, that even period sourcing blurs the line. One collector account credits Voris Dixon with building an early handlebar for Chris Moeller alongside what it calls Star Products' GHP bar, a phrasing that mixes the two names in a single breath. We can't untangle that specific reference further than the source allows, so we're flagging it rather than inventing a clean story that isn't there. It's exactly the kind of mix-up this page is meant to settle where the record allows, and to mark honestly where it doesn't.

Where the record runs thin

• Greg Hill's father's first name. Voris Dixon's interview identifies him only as Greg Hill's father. Some secondary collector references name him John Hill; that first name isn't independently confirmed against a primary source here, so it's presented as reported rather than verified.
• Star's founding and closing years. Not established in the sources checked for this page. What's confirmed is that it was active while Dixon's VDC was operating, roughly 1979 to 1985, and that it predates Greg Hill's own GHP, founded in 1983.
• Whether Star made anything beyond frames, forks, and bars — number plates or other accessories, for instance. Nothing in the sources checked here confirms or rules that out.

The VDC connection

Star Products is one name on VDC's longer client list, which included brands that competed directly against each other on the track while Voris Dixon built for all of them in the same Santa Ana shop, including Traker and Vector, both VDC clients in the same years.
